Social Welfare Minister Dipu Moni said that investing in women is crucial for the country and society as it boosts inclusive economic growth and competitiveness, secures social stability, drives sustainable development, and enhances productivity and innovations.

“In the 21st century, investing in women isn't just the right thing to do. It is essential,” she said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar titled "Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress" aligning with the UN's call for International Women's Day 2024.

American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) organised the seminar at Sheraton Dhaka on Sunday.

Helen LaFave, Deputy Chief of Mission, US Embassy, Dhaka, attended the programme as the guest of honour. AmCham President Syed Ershad Ahmed chaired the session while Rubaba Dowla, Country Managing Director Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Oracle Bangladesh Limited, moderated the discussion.

Dipu Moni who delivered the keynote speech also said, “In Bangladesh, investing in women has become a moral imperative and a strategic policy decision with far-reaching implications across socio-economic, technological and political spheres.”

“By providing women with equal opportunities in education, employment and leadership role, we unlock their full potential as contributors to the economy and society,” she added.

Through initiatives such as providing access to education and skills training, ensuring equal employment opportunities and promoting women's entrepreneurship, she said, the government aims to enhance women's participation in the workforce and decision-making processes.

The minister said, “Recognising the contribution that women make to household financial decision-making processes and ensuring their agency and control over their incomes are indispensable steps towards achieving genuine financial empowerment for women throughout Bangladesh.”

Syed Ershad Ahmed said, “According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), women's workforce participation has risen from 36 per cent to 43 per cent, reflecting a significant progress. Women's empowerment directly fuels inclusive and sustainable economic growth.”

“Female education in Bangladesh has experienced a profound transformation, shifting from restricted access to widespread enrolment. Recent data from the 2022 Population and Housing Census shows a significant increase in female literacy, now at 72.82 per cent, closely following male literacy rates.”

According to the government statistics, Bangladesh’s women contribute approximately 20 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

“By investing in women's education, entrepreneurship, and engagement in decision-making process, Bangladesh can further advance gender equality, foster inclusive development, and create a brighter, and more equitable future for all,” said Ershad.

Nafriza Shayma, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Cultural Affairs, Sonia Bashir Kabir, Founder and Managing General Partner, SBK Tech Ventures (licensed venture capital firm), Sarah Ali, Managing Director, FCB BITOPI, participated as designated discussants.

Al-Mamun M Rashel, Treasurer AmCham and the Country Manager and Managing Director, NATco Packaging Bangladesh Ltd offered the vote of thanks.
