The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) President Md Jashim Uddin is going to be the new South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCI) president for the next two years.

Through a gala ceremony, the FBCCI president will be appointed as SAARC-CCI president at Dhaka’s InterContinental Hotel on May 25, sources said on Monday.

He will succeed Pakistan’s Iftikhar Ali Malik, who served as the president from June 2020 to May 2023.

Generally, the president is elected from eight SAARC countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka — every two years.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen will be the chief guest while Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi and Prime Minister's Private Sector Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman are expected to attend the programme as special guests.

Representatives from all eight countries will also be present at the event.

Our correspondent tried to contact Md Jashim Uddin, but he did not respond.

Earlier, two presidents elected from Bangladesh were Salman F Rahman (1996 to 1997) and Annisul Huq (2010 to 2011).

In October 1993, S M Inam from Pakistan was elected as the first president of SAARC-CCI (1994 to 1995).
