JMI Group founder Razzaq gets CIP award for 3rd time

Md Abdur Razzaq, founder and managing director of JMI Group, has received the CIP (commercially important person) award for the third time.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi conferred him the honour at a function at the Hotel Sonargaon in the capital on Sunday for his contribution to the country’s export and trade in 2021, read a press release.

In 2015 and 2017, the industries ministry had also honoured Abdur Razzaq as the CIP for his contribution to the country’s economy.

JMI Group, one of the country’s leading pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturing companies, was founded by Razzaq in 1999.

The Group currently has a total of 42 companies in various sectors, including pharmaceutical and medical equipment manufacturing, marketing, healthcare, housing, printing, industrial gas, LPG, LPG cylinder and auto tank manufacturing. Two of these companies are listed in the capital market.

In the long journey of about 25 years, JMI Group's investment in these companies has crossed Tk 5,000 crore. Of this, about Tk 5,000 crore came from Japan, South Korea, Thailand, Turkey and China as foreign direct investment (FDI).

JMI Group started its journey with only 50 employees, whereas today the total number of employees exceeds 8,500.

More than 400 types of medical equipment and healthcare products are currently being manufactured in various industries of this industrial group, of which at least 50 are manufactured for the first time in Bangladesh.

The products are regularly exported to more than 40 countries of the world, including Asia, Europe, Middle East, South America and Africa.

In this two decades’ journey, JMI Group has already been crowned the best in the healthcare sector by serving the country and the people.

JMI Group has played a leading role during the severe humanitarian crisis in the country during the Covid-19 pandemic. This industrial group was the constant partner of the government in dealing with Covid-19.

Md Abdur Razzaq has received the CIP award as the managing director of the company, NIPRO JMI Company Ltd, which is a Japan-Bangladesh joint venture company.

This is the country’s only company, which is 100 per cent export-oriented and manufactures blood tubing sets used for treatment of renal patients. Recently, this company also received the National Export Trophy for its contribution to the country’s export and trade for FY20.

Currently, Abdur Razzaq is a member of the Executive Committee of Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Industry Association, founder and general secretary of Bangladesh Association for Medical Devices and Surgical Instruments Manufacturers and Exporters, member of Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Korea-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, member of Indo-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and serving as a member of Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB).

Abdur Razzaq was born in 1964 at Azizpur village in Senbagh upazila of Noakhali to a noble Muslim family. His father is late Md Shafiullah and mother is late Anowara Begum. He completed his Master’s degree in economics from Chittagong University in 1989.
