MACN Bangladesh holds first group meeting

The Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN) Bangladesh held its first Working Group Meeting on 20th February 2024, at the conference room of Shippers’ Council of Bangladesh (SCB).

The objective of the meeting was to discuss corruption issues in the Maritime Sector in Bangladesh and possible mitigation measures. The meeting was presided by the Chairman of Shippers’ Council of Bangladesh Rezaul Karim, Executive Director of UN Global Compact Network Bangladesh Shahamin Zaman, and Project Lead of MACN Bangladesh Syed Ariful Islam were present in the meeting.

SCB Senior Vice Chairman Md Ariful Ahsan & Vice Chairman Ganesh Chandra Saha also attended the meeting. The meeting was attended by representatives from various shipping associations and companies, as well as officials from the SCB.

The participants exchanged views and experiences on the challenges and risks of corruption in the maritime industry, and explored potential solutions and best practices to promote integrity and transparency in port operations and cargo clearance processes.

MACN is a global business network working to end corruption in the Maritime sector globally. Since 2022, MACN through its partnership with the United Nations Global Compact Network Bangladesh (GCNB) has been advocating to identify and mitigate corruption in the Maritime sector in Bangladesh.

In December 2023, MACN Bangladesh formed its first Working Group with the objective of identifying key areas of vulnerability, developing and implementing mitigation strategies, enabling collaboration, advocating policy measures, and supporting its members in Bangladesh.
