Mohammed Akther Parvez Chowdhury, managing director of PHP Stocks and Securities Ltd, was elected as a director of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE).

Akther Parvez secured a highest 83 votes in the election for two directors held Thursday. Director of BK Capital Management Ltd, Major (Retd.), Emdadul Islam received 50 votes, securing his place as the other newly elected director.

A total of six candidates contested the election. Voting commenced at 10am on Thursday in the CSE's hall room and continued until 3pm. The Election Management Committee Chairman AKM Mohsenuddin Ahmed Chowdhury announced the results at 4pm.

Among the remaining four candidates, Md Siddiqur Rahman received 46 votes, Mohammad Mohiuddin (FCA) garnered 17 votes, Md Osman Goni secured 13 votes, and Nur Mohammad obtained 11 votes.

Akther Parvez was born in 1983 in Chattogram. He is the youngest son of Ekushey Padak winner Sufi Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, the chairman of the renowned industrial group PHP Family.

After completing his secondary education at Sunshine Grammar School, Akther Parvez obtained a diploma in advertising and marketing from the University of Canberra in Australia. In 2004, he obtained a bachelor's degree in communication from the same university. He then returned to the country and joined the family business.

Akther Parvez, also a director of the centennial business organisation Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, honorary consul of Malaysia in Chittagong, and chairman of the cricket committee of the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters Sports Club.

He is also a director of PHP Continuous Galvanizing Mills Limited, PHP Shipbreaking and Recycling Industries Limited, PHP Steel Limited, PHP Integrated Steel Limited, PHP Petro Refinery Limited, PHP Fisheries Limited, PHP Spinning Mills Limited, PHP Steel Works Limited, PHP Agro Products Limited, PHP Textile Limited, Dina and Cold Storage Limited, Bay Terminal and Distribution Company Limited, PHP Float Glass Industries Limited, and the University of Information Technology and Science (UITS).

Later, the 28th annual general meeting of the CSE was held after the election ceremony. It was presided over by CSE Chairman Asif Ibrahim.

The meeting was attended by CSE directors Abdul Halim Chowdhury, Monjurul Ahasan Bulbul, Ishter Mahal, Mohammad Naqib Uddin Khan, managing director (in charge) Md Golam Faruk, and company secretary Rajib Saha.

At the annual general meeting, shareholders approved the payment of a 5 per cent cash dividend for the fiscal year 2022-2023.
