University teachers and industrialists on Thursday underscored the need of building an institution or platform to strengthen the collaboration between academia and industry to compete with the global market.

The experts came up with the remarks at a program titled, "Transitioning towards Hi-tech Industrialisation in Bangladesh” organised by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) in Dhaka.

While speaking at the event, BUET Professor Dr Muhammad Anisuzzaman Talukder said, “High tech industry cannot be built without research ecosystem. But there is no investment from the government for research. Without research, no innovative work can take place and therefore, we must plan where we want to go and strengthen the collaboration between academia and Industry."

Meanwhile, Islamic University Professor Dr M Mahbubur Rahman urged industrialists to manage internships in their companies for the students to strengthen the collaboration.

"If our students can do a good job abroad, they can do it here too. The talented students will come back to our country and play a significant role in developing the industry and economy," he added.

Prime Minister's Energy Adviser Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury as the chief guest called upon the MCCI to take an initiative to build a platform to strengthen the collaboration between academia and industry.

Giving the example of South Korea, Tawfiq mentioned that once South Korea was a follower of technology, but now they are one of the leaders in the technology field.

At the same time, he also urged industrialists to build a world-class technology institute where people will come for research and the government will provide policy support if needed.
