The Institute of Chartered Secretaries of Bangladesh (ICSB) has given a silver award to Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC, for maintaining outstanding corporate governance practices through discipline, transparency and accountability in overall management for the seventh time.

Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC CEO Md Shakawath Hossain, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Company Secretary Md Sharif Hasan and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jone Kumar Gupta received the award at an event on Saturday.

The programme, titled “10th ICSB National Award for Corporate Governance Excellence 2022,” took place at the city’s Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden on Saturday.

ICSB awarded 43 organisations, including Unique Hotel & Resorts PLC, at the programme. As per ICSB standard, these companies were awarded based on their success in 2022. This year’s theme for the award was “Promoting Governing Governance.”

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi attended the event as chief guest.

Former principal secretary to the prime minister and Capital Market Stabilisation Fund (CMSF) Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman, and Commerce Ministry Senior Secretary Tapan Kanti Ghosh were there as special guests.

Corporate Governance Committee Chairman M Nurul Alam FCS and many senior officials of different organisations were present at the programme as well. ICSB President Mohammad Asad Ullah FCS presided over the programme.

In 14 categories, 43 companies listed under the DSE and CSE received crests and certificates from Tipu Munshi. The awards had three categories – gold, silver and bronze.

Under the General Banking Sector, Eastern Bank PLC received gold, Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd silver, and Brac Bank Ltd bronze awards.

Speaking as the chief guest, Commerce Ministry Tipu Munshi said, “This award is not only a commemoration, it is a standard for corporate excellence in Bangladesh. The ICSB has become a trusted name in corporate governance for the last few decades, an admirable achievement.”

Congratulating the winners, the minister said, “Due to such an event, listed companies are putting more care into ensuring good governance and compliance.

“ICSB has been working tirelessly to establish an improved corporate culture in the country by creating skilled human resources.”

Speaking as the special guest, CMSF Chairman Md Nojibur Rahman said, “The most important matter for this ceremony is to build awareness about good corporate governance, transparency and accountability.”

ICSB President Mohammad Asad Ullah FCS said, “We need a new company act on an emergency basis to ease the process of running businesses, boost FDI, and protect the interest of investors and stakeholders.

“The corporate sector firmly believes that a new company act will be able to solve these problems, and speed up Bangladesh’s economic progress further.”

ICSB Corporate Governance Committee Chairman M Nurul Alam FCS said, “Our goal is to commemorate the companies and managements that are pledge-bound to ensure good corporate governance.

“Alongside this, we also want to encourage the companies to follow the BSEC Corporate Governance Code, Company Act 1994, and globally recognised corporate practices.”
