Floods wash away 1,500 fish farms in Habiganj

Fish from 1,500 fish farms worth around taka 10 crore were washed away in Habiganj after a devastating flood triggered by heavy rainfall and an onrush of water from upstream inundated a large area of land in the region.

Md Wahidur Rahman, deputy director of Habiganj district fisheries office said around 5.37 lakh tonnes of Carp-like fish and three crore small fishes of various types have been washed away by floodwaters.

District fisheries directorate sources said around 900 fish farms were affected by floodwaters. They said around 5.37 lakh tonnes of Carp-like fish and three crore small fish of various types were washed away in Habiganj Sadar upazila, 250 farms in Nabiganj upazila, 200 in Madhabpur upazila, 82 in Chunurighat upazila, 35 in Bahubal upazila, and 20 in Shayesthaganj upazila.

As such around 516 fish farmers were severely affected in the region due to flooding.
