Three more rice varieties developed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) received the government's approval for cultivation. BRRI dhan103 was released for cultivation in the Aman season, while BRRI dhan104 and BRRI hybrid dhan8 were released for the Boro season.

The varieties were approved for cultivation in the National Seed Board’s 108th meeting chaired by Ministry of Agriculture Secretary Md Sayedul Islam, held at the ministry's conference room on Monday.

BRRI Director General Md Shahjahan Kabir and the heads of the departments under the agriculture ministry were also present on the occasion.

The newly developed variety BRRI dhan103 has an average life time of 132 days. While this variety’s average yield is 6.2 tonnes per hectare, it is capable of yielding up to 8 tonnes per hectare.

BRRI dhan104 is a variety of aromatic rice much like basmati. The amount of amylose in this rice is 29.2 per cent, and the amount of protein is 8.9 per cent. After cooking, the rice is non-sticky.

This variety’s average yield is 7.29 tonnes per hectare. However, it is capable of yielding up to 8.71 tonnes per hectare.

With a life time of 145-148 days, the BRRI hybrid dhan8 can yield 10.5-11 tonnes per hectare on average. The variety’s seed production capacity is 1.8-2.2 tonnes per hectare in the Boro season.
