Dense fog coupled with the wind has disrupted flight operations at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka with several flights delayed and three diverted to neighbouring countries.

Group Captain Muhammed Kamrul Islam, executive director of the airport, told The Business Post that the runway remained invisible for several hours since early Friday due to dense fog, causing the diversion of the flights.

Two flights from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia landed at India’s Kolkata airport and another flight of AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia landed at Myanmar’s Yangon airport, he said.

Due to poor visibility caused by dense fog, Kamrul said, “The pilots did not land the aircraft to avoid any possible risk. They usually land when the runway is visible from around 600-800 metres above the ground.”

Dense fog also caused disruptions as 10-15 international and domestic flights could not manage to take off the runway, according to sources at the airport.

Kamrul, however, claimed the flights left the airport on time and there was no problem.
