Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Chairman Prof Rehman Sobhan says the import of luxury items should be banned completely to alleviate the ongoing shortage of USD and rein in the ongoing steady depletion of reserves.

The eminent economist pointed out that a large part of the country's remittances come through illegal channels, so further initiatives are needed to bring the inflow through legal channels.

Prof Sobhan however added that he is not in favour of a market-based exchange rate. He was speaking at an event titled “Conversation with Professor Dr Rehman Sobhan,” organised by the Economic Reporters Forum in Dhaka on Monday.
