Remittance inflows through official channels in Bangladesh have surged following the appointment of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus as the head of the interim government.
In the first 24 days of August, the country received $1.72 billion in remittances, according to the data of Wage earners’ remittance report released by Bangladesh Bank on Sunday.
The data also indicates that during the quota reform movement and the subsequent fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, remittance inflows were only $95.65 million in the first week of August.
However, in the second week, the remittance inflows were $387.12 million when Prof Yunus assumed office.
The third week of August saw the highest remittance inflow in recent times, at $651.45 million, while the fourth week recorded $584.11 million.
In total, $1,718 million in wage earners’ remittances came in during the first 24 days (four weeks) of August. This compares to $1,323 million during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, in his address to the nation on Sunday, Chief Adviser Prof Yunus encouraged expatriates to send remittances through official channels. He also assured that necessary steps will be taken to boost remittances through official channels.
