The search committee for the appointment of deputy governors (DG) has announced that two deputy governors at Bangladesh Bank (BB) will be selected within this week.
Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury, convenor of the search committee and former finance secretary, stated that the selection process will consider both current and former executive directors of the central bank.
Muslim Chowdhury told The Business Post, “Deputy governors’ appointment process will be finished within two to three days. The committee will recommend appointing two deputy governors as there are two DG’s performing their duty.”
He also mentioned that it is not possible to determine precisely how many CVs have been submitted so far. However, the CVs of both current and former executive directors of the central bank, including those who retired in the last 20 years, have been reviewed.
Besides, member of the search committee and BB former chief economist Mustafa Kamal Mujeri said, “We are trying to appoint the deputy governors as soon as possible. Eligible people will be given a place in this post. As this post will be appointed soon, the decision has been made not to advertise in the newspaper.”
Meanwhile, the search committee members held a meeting at the central bank on Sunday, which concluded at 12pm. Sources revealed that applicants' CVs were scrutinised during the meeting. This was the second meeting of the committee, following an earlier one held last Thursday.
Earlier, the finance ministry formed a four-member search committee to appoint deputy governors for the central bank, led by the former comptroller and auditor general Mohammad Muslim Chowdhury.
Other members of the committee are economist Mustafa Kamal Mujeri, BB Member [board of directors] Md Nazrul Huda and Financial Institutions Division Joint Secretary Badre Munir Ferdous.
Previously, on August 7, some employees staged a protest demanding the resignation of the governor, deputy governors, adviser, and the head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU).
As a result, two deputy governors, Khurshid Alam and Kazi Sayedur Rahman, resigned on August 12.
At present, deputy governors Md Habibur Rahman and Nurun Nahar are serving in their roles; both are former executive directors of the central bank.
