Although the country’s banking sector is currently facing a liquidity crisis, six out of the nine fourth-generation banks have excess liquidity. NRBC Bank posted the highest surplus liquidity at Tk 2,450 crore, according to the Bangladesh Bank sources.
According to central bank data till August this year, NRBC Bank’s surplus liquidity is Tk 2,450 crore. The bank collected deposits of Tk 17,116 crore, and disbursed loan amount is Tk 14,160 crore.
The bank’s advanced deposit ratio (ADR) is 82.73 per cent, which is lower than the fixed level.
Banks were instructed in April 2020 to maintain the ADR within 87 per cent for conventional banks and 92 per cent for the Shariah-based bank.
Speaking to The Business Post, NRBC Bank Chairman Parvez Tamal said, “The policy of NRBC Bank board of directors is to bring banking services to the people in remote villages without restricting banking services to urban areas.
“The bank management is working to develop the low-income people as entrepreneurs, and the move has been successful. The management is implementing this successfully. Besides, the bank did not pour money into single borrowers.”
He added that such policies helped the NRBC Bank safeguard people’s deposits.
Midland Bank has the second highest excess liquidity of Tk 950 crore. The deposit amount of the bank is Tk 6,000 crore. Out of this amount, Tk 5,500 crore has been disbursed as loans, and the ADR is 85 per cent.
Meanwhile, Meghna Bank posted Tk 850 crore excess liquidity at the end of August this year. It has lent Tk 6,300 crore against Tk 7,900 crore deposits and the ADR is 80 per cent.
NRB bank posted Tk 200 crore excess liquidity and the deposit amount is around Tk 7,000 crore and the lending amount is Tk 5,900 crore. The ADR of the bank is 85 per cent.
Modhumoti Bank has collected about Tk 7,800 crore of deposits and disbursed loans of Tk 6,500 crore. It posted Tk 830 crore excess liquidity and ADR is 83.33 per cent.
South Bangla Agriculture and Commerce Bank (SBAC) posted Tk 10,200 crore in deposits and distributed Tk 8,500 crore, ADR is 84 per cent. Surplus liquidity of the bank is Tk 500 crore.
SBAC Bank Banani Branch Manager SEVP Mohammad Asadul Haque said, “We do not have any problem in paying money to our customers. We can also settle a large number of cheques. Foreign commercial transactions are also being conducted normally.
A visit to the principal branch of NRBC Bank in Motijheel also showed the same picture, as customers showed their satisfaction with the banking services.
Mohammad Saidur Rahman, owner of Varna Shikha Offset Printing Press who came to withdraw money, said, “I did not face any problems in withdrawing money from the bank so far.”
NRBC Bank Principal Branch Manager SVP Abdul Awal Miah said, “There is no problem in paying the customers according to their demand. They can withdraw and transfer any amount of money from our bank.”
