Syed Abu Naser Bukhtear Ahmed – former managing director of Agrani Bank – has been appointed the bank’s chairman for the next three years. The Financial Institution Department (FID) – operating under the finance ministry – issued a notification in this regard on Monday.

Syed Abu Naser also served as the independent director of Dhaka Bank.

He also serves as an independent director of International Leasing and Financial Services Ltd (ILFSL) as per the Supreme Court directive to bring the financial institution back to good health. It should be noted that PK Halder embezzled over Tk 2,000 crore from the ILFSL.

The eminent banker Naser has 40 years experiences, and served as managing director for Prime and South-East Bank. He is also involved with The Dhaka Forum, a non-profit, non-partisan, and non-political civil society platform.

Dr Zaid Bakht had previously served as the Agrani Bank chairman for a decade during the Hasina regime. After that regime fell, Zaid resigned from his post on 25th August.

Bakht was the research director in the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS). After retirement, he was appointed as the director of Sonali Bank on 19 December 2012.

Then on November 18, 2014, the government appointed Bakht as the chairman of Agrani Bank for three years. On 4 December 2017, he was reappointed for a second term of three years.

On December 7, 2020, Bakht was reappointed as chairman of Agrani bank for the third term for another three years. In November last year, the government reappointed him as the chairman of Agrani Bank for another year.

And Bakht term was due to expire after three months naturally. He resigned before the end of his term due to political change in the country. If the Hasina regime continued, Bakht may have held onto his position as the Agrani Bank chairman, believe many bankers.
