BB deputy governor resigns, many flee in face of protests

Instability has hit the Bangladesh Bank on the second day after opening offices, as a ripple effect of the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

Central bank employees and staff began protests from Wednesday morning demanding the resignation of the Bangladesh Bank governor, deputy governor, policy advisor and Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) chief.

Protesters entered the governor’s floor in the central bank's main building and forced Deputy Governor-1 Kazi Sayedur Rahman to sign an empty page. Many others left the central bank premises without resigning.

Executive directors of the regulating body have held a meeting over the ongoing situation. Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rauf Talukdar was not in the office at the time of the unrest.

Eyewitnesses say more than two hundred officers and employees joined the protest. They demanded that all deputy governors, as well as Governor Abdur Rauf Talukdar, should resign and be prosecuted immediately.

The protesters also demanded effective measures to prevent their escape from the country. Besides, and firm action against executive directors who had been involved in irregularities.
