Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur on Wednesday said the government will take over the shares of Islami Bank in accordance with the law, which are currently held by the controversial conglomerate S Alam Group.
Mansur, addressing a press conference at the central bank head office, added that the incumbent board of directors will be dissolved soon, and a new independent board will be formed in its stead.
Recently, a segment of officials and former directors of the bank have been demanding that the Islami Bank board be dissolved. They had also sent a number of letters to the Bangladesh Bank governor.
According to their letter, S Alom group currently hold 82 per cent shares of Islami Bank. The bank was taken over by the oligarch in 2017 with the help of Hasina regime.
