The Bangladesh Bank on Thursday lifted the uniform exchange rate for the US dollar and asked banks verbally to set the exchange rate as per the demand and supply.

“The exchange rate will be set by banks depending on demand-supply.  However, the central bank is observing the forex market,” BB Executive Director and spokesman Md Serajul Islam told the Business Post.

On Sunday, BB fixed the inter-bank exchange rate at Tk 89 per US dollar, following requests from two apex bodies of bankers and forex dealers in the country.

Earlier, the Association of Bankers, Bangladesh (ABB) and the Bangladesh Foreign Exchange Dealers' Association (BAFEDA) sent a letter to the central bank requesting a uniform dollar exchange rate under the four categories.

In the letter, two apex bodies called for fixing the inter-bank exchange rate at Tk89.8 per US dollar, instead of the existing rate at Tk87.9.
