The production of Boro paddy increased by 1.51 per cent in FY22 compared year-on-year. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) published the report last week.

Rice is a staple food in Bangladesh and Boro paddy accounts for nearly 55 per cent of the country's yearly rice production.

According to the report, the Boro output was 2.01 crore tonnes in FY22, while it was 1.98 crore tonnes in the fiscal year 2020-21.

The report has been published at a time when farmers will harvest this year’s crop between April and June. The Boro paddy is usually planted from November to February.

According to BBS officials, although the utility of the data is just for keeping a record, the organisation should provide the data as early as possible after harvesting.

Speaking to The Business Post on condition of anonymity, a senior BBS official said the real picture cannot be obtained if there are delays in collecting and publishing data.

“If the data was provided timely, the government could have taken the right strategies for food security in the country,” he added.
