The honorarium for Bangladesh’s war veterans witnessed no change in the proposed national budget for FY2022-23 as the government has allocated a minimum of Tk 20,000 per person like the previous fiscal year.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal made the proposal while presenting the next budget in parliament on Thursday.

To improve the socio-economic condition of freedom fighters, construction of Muktijoddha Complex buildings in every district and upazila of the country is nearly completed,” Kamal said in this budget speech.

“We are working relentlessly for the preservation of the history, heritage and memory of the great liberation war and for the welfare of the valiant freedom fighters.

“In the light of the directives of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, the monthly honorarium of all classes of valiant freedom fighters has been increased to a minimum of Tk 20,000 from the current fiscal year,” he said.

In the meantime, Management Information System with comprehensive information of freedom fighters and an integrated list have been prepared. Besides, the process of issuing smart cards and digital certificates is at the final stage to ensure the identity of the freedom fighters, the minister added.

In the outgoing FY2021-22, the government had allocated Tk 1,920 crore to pay the allowances to the freedom fighters, increasing the per capita honorarium to Tk 20,000 from Tk 12,000.

In FY2020-21 and FY2019-20, each time, Tk 3385.05 crore was allocated for this purpose.

The allocation was Tk 3,200 crore and Tk 2996.15 crore in FY2017-18 and FY2018-19, respectively.
