The government has proposed to increase the tax levied on passengers for domestic and foreign travel in the national budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2023-24 (FY24).

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal proposed to impose a new travel tax in the budget proposal placed at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday.

According to the proposal, travelling to India by road will cost Tk 1000 per person while travel by plane will cost Tk 2,000. In addition, for travelling to countries in nearby regions, a person would have to spend Tk 4,000 while travelling to America and Europe will cost Tk 6,000.

Minister Kamal said, “Due to the unstable war situation in the world, there are signs of recession in the global economy. In this case, we have to face a difficult situation in the next financial year. We have to deal with the situation through formulating financial rules and implement those with great prudence and foresight.”

“I propose a multi-modal increase in travel tax rates to reduce unnecessary foreign travel among the public, inculcate austerity habits and create new revenue streams in the economy. This policy will give us more revenue on the one hand and save dollars on the other hand by reducing unnecessary foreign travel,” he added.
