Unrealistic targets have been set in the proposed national budget for FY24 amid global and domestic economic headwinds, the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) said on Friday.

As a result, the new budget cannot be implemented to a large extent, the local think tank said while expressing its official opinion about the proposed budget at a press briefing in Dhaka.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal on Thursday placed a Tk 7,61,785 crore national budget for FY24 at the Jatiya Sangsad with a focus on tackling skyrocketing inflation, employment generation, the fourth industrial revolution, and ultimately, building a “Smart Bangladesh.”

The CPD believes that bringing inflation down to 6 per cent will be very challenging.

Executive Director of CPD Fahmida Khatun said the prices of all products in the international market are going down. While inflation in the country is rising due to internal weaknesses, nothing has been mentioned in the budget to deal with those, she said.

CPD Distinguished Fellow Mustafizur Rahman said revenue income should grow by 40 per cent in the new FY, compared to the outgoing FY.
