Even though Bangladesh’s overall imports have dropped due to dollar crisis, it has no impact on revenue collection by Chattogram Customs House.

The country’s largest customs house has earned Tk 28,036.66 crore in revenue in the first five months (July-November) of the current fiscal year which was Tk 2,254 crore or 8.74 per cent higher than the same period of last fiscal year.

The revenue target set for Chattogram Customs House for the first five months of the current fiscal was Tk 31,720 crore, but the revenue was 11.6 per cent less than the target.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has set a revenue collection target of Tk 116,100 crore for FY2023-24 for 17 customs stations of the country at import level.

Among them, the revenue collection target for Chattogram Customs House was set at Tk 77,616 crore, which was 67 per cent of the total target.

When asked about revenue collection, Mohammad Fyzur Rahman, commissioner of Chattogram Customs House said, “Every year Chattogram Customs House plays a significant role in revenue collection. At import level, we generate the highest revenue in the country.”

“If some government institutions would have paid their dues, the revenue collection would have increased. Besides, due to dollar crisis, some products were imported less which led to less revenue from that sector,” he added.

He also said that the growth has increased this year comparing to the collection in the previous years.

In July, Chattogram Customs House collected Tk 5,472.77 crore in revenue, up 14.28 per cent from the target of Tk 4,789 crore. Compared to the same month of the previous year, the growth was 14.46 per cent.

In August, the revenue collection was Tk 5,711.68 crore against target of Tk 6,027 crore. Although the collection was 5.23 per cent less than the target, the growth was 3.88 per cent compared to the same period of the previous year.

In September, the target of revenue collection was set at Tk 7,050 crore but the collection was Tk 5,290.21 crore, 24.96 per cent less than the target. However, compared to the same period of last fiscal year, the growth was 3.62 per cent.

In October, the revenue collection target was set at Tk 6,917 crore, but the actual collection was Tk 5,661 crore, falling short of target by 18.16 per cent. However, the year-on-year growth in this month was 15.09 per cent.

In the month of November, the revenue target was Tk 6,973 crore while actual revenue collection was Tk 5,901 crore, showing a shortfall of 14.93 per cent. Compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year, revenue collection increased 7.70 per cent.
