Chinese businesses urged to invest more in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) Executive Chairman Maj Gen Abul Kalam Mohammad Ziaur Rahman has urged Chinese entrepreneurs to invest more in Bangladesh.

He made the call at the 15th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Bangladesh China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) at Dhaka Club in the capital on Wednesday.

"Bangladesh is an investment potential place for foreign investors from an overall perspective. We will build 100 economic zones to diversify products and exports. So, there is a huge scope for investment," he said.

Kalam also said they will work cordially with the BCCCI to further promote trade and investment.

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Member Avijit Chowdhury said Bangladesh has a congenial atmosphere for investment.

"We hope the BCCCI will work so that reinvestment comes more in Bangladesh in the future. We have to think that how much facilities can be taken through relationships. The government of Bangladesh is much business and investment friendly," he added.

Speaking at the event, BCCCI President Gazi Golam Murtoza said they have been playing a significant role in trade and investment between Bangladesh and China since 2003.

"We have to overcome many challenges following the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and USD appreciation against Taka. Despite the challenges, we are continuing our activities successfully."

BCCCI acting secretary general Al Mamun Mridha said they have taken the trade and investment relationship between the two countries to an apex level through their innovative activities.

"However, we arranged a series of events online and offline during the pandemic period. We discussed policy and trade with the government and private stakeholders. We hope our relations with Chinese friends will strengthen further in the coming days."

He added that there is a big opportunity in the Chinese market for Bangladeshi entrepreneurs.

Chinese Enterprises Association in Bangladesh (CEAB) President Ke Changliang said the infrastructure of Bangladesh developed immensely while many Chinese companies played a significant role here.

"We have been working in Bangladesh for a long time for social and economic development. We have sped up our relations with Bangladesh. Bangladeshi entrepreneurs have a great chance in China market," he added.

BCCCI Senior Vice-President Brig Gen (retd) Shah Md Sultan Uddin Iqbal, among others, also spoke at the event.
