The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has called on the government to give utmost importance to controlling inflation, noting that the real picture is different from what is shown in official figures.

The call was made during a discussion titled "Which way Bangladesh’s economy is going in the changed global context?" held at CPD's Dhanmondi office around 11:00 am on Sunday.

In the discussion, CPD Executive Director Dr Fahmida Khatun said that while Bangladesh’s economy was recovering from the effects of the Covid pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war created global instability which is affecting Bangladesh as well.

Even before that, inflation in Bangladesh was on the rise. Rice, oil, sugar, beef, onion are more expensive in Bangladesh than in the international market. However, the government figures showed a downward trend in inflation, she added.

The CPD official advised the government to take necessary steps to protect the poor from the impact of rising commodity prices.
