Chittagong port has suspended its operational activities as Cyclonic storm Sitrang approaches the Bangladesh coast.

Following the Meteorological department’s issuing of danger signal no 7 on Monday, the port implemented its own set of preventative measures.

The loading and unloading of cargo from the mother vessel has ceased at the port's outer anchorage and jetties in the meantime. But since Sunday, the outer anchorage has been blocked to cargo unloading.

Port have opened a control room monitor the situation, he said.

All ocean-going vessels at jetties within the harbour have been ordered to move to outer anchorage.

On the other hand, small vessels, lighterage vessels, fishing trawlers, and other vessels have been asked to stay outside the port channel within the Banglabazar to Kalurghat bridge area of the Karnaphuli river.

According to the Patenga Meteorological Office, the cyclone was 590km away from the Chittagong port around 9:00am. The wind speed in Chattogram region is about 20 nautical miles per hour.
