Digital payments to boost GDP by 1.7%

Digital payments can boost Bangladesh’s annual GDP by 1.7 per cent, according to estimates from the UN-based Better Than Cash Alliance’s latest country analysis with the government’s flagship program Aspire to Innovate (a2i).

This means adding Tk 50,058 crores annually to the economy, said a press release.

Acting on the findings from the new analysis, the government has released the 2022-2025 National Digital Payments Roadmap.

Planning Minister MA Mannan on Wednesday in an online event launched the publication.

The roadmap identifies 22 solutions to build a safe, interoperable, and inclusive digital payments ecosystem over the next three years in priority sectors of ready-made garment (RMG), retail, agriculture, health, and education.

In his speech as the chief guest, MA Mannan said: “In the last 13 years, Bangladesh's economy has risen tremendously. By 2035, we hope to be ranked among the top 25 economies in the world. We intend to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, and we become a fully developed country by 2041. In this journey, digitalisation can play a crucial role. It is one of our primary commitments, and we are working hard to achieve it by creating a cashless society.”
