In a bid to mitigate sufferings of businessmen, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh has announced his decision to issue trade licence and extend renewal period for five years.

He also encouraged all concerned to disseminate this information and avail themselves of the facility.

Taposh made the disclosure at a programme organised by Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) at its Motijheel office in the capital on Monday.

Issues of organising trade licence fairs targeting women, regional and zonal entrepreneurs, strengthening DSCC's online certification platform against cyber threats, and ongoing maintenance and monitoring of newly-built infrastructure came up at the programme for discussion.

While speaking as the chief guest, Taposh also outlined the country's future development goals, stressing the need for both soft and hard infrastructures.

He shared plans to relocate chemical factories in designated specific industrial zones, and oversee proper urban development. His vision aims to make Old Dhaka and other areas under DSCC jurisdiction attractive destinations for both tourists and businesses.

Speaking at the programme, MCCI President Md. Saiful Islam welcomed the decision and thanked the mayor for fulfilling his commitment he made in August 2022 to consider MCCI's request for extending the licence tenure.

Islam emphasised Bangladesh's impressive development, citing new infrastructure projects like metro rail and elevated expressway.

He also noted the country's resilience in addressing global challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war.

Expressing gratitude to the mayor and the government for ensuring a stable socio-political and business environment, he called for improving ease of doing business in Bangladesh.

He urged all stakeholders to support such initiatives and reaffirmed MCCI’s dedication to such efforts.

Earlier, businessmen suffered a lot when they went to take trade licences and renew them. The business community had long been requesting the authority concerned to extend the trade licence tenure for five years aimed at reducing hassle and saving time. Now they can get licences for five years instead of one year.
