Agriculture Minister M Abdur Razzaque on Wednesday said the government is planning to enhance quality mango production in the country and its export by implementing a project.

“A project titled ‘Exportable Mango Production Project’ is being implemented at 40 upazilas under 15 districts to raise mango production and export by five per cent”, said the minister while responding to a star-marked question which was raised by treasury bench lawmaker Dr Samil Uddin Ahmed Shimul of Chapainawabganj-1constituency tabled at the Jatiya Sangsad session.

The project will also help to elevate expertise of the mango producers, marketers and the exporters as well, he told the house with Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury in the chair.

Programmes on extension of new mango varieties, production and conservation of the exportable mango are now underway by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

Additionally, the minister said that research is also underway at the regional horticulture centre in Chapainawabganj for enhancing more mango production.

So far, a total of 18 mango varieties already have been released from the research centre. A total of five developed, nutritious and late varieties like BARI-13, BARI-15, BARI-16, BARI-17 and BARI-18 have been invented from the research centre in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 fiscals.

Even, technology has been invented to produce different food products like mango pickle, mango powder, Jam and Jelly.
