Occupational safety and health (OSH) experts have called upon the Bangladesh government to ratify ILO Conventions 155 and 187 to strengthen workplace safety and health protections.

They emphasised the need for a comprehensive roadmap and strategy to address the country's specific challenges in this area.

The experts made these recommendations at a workshop titled “Fundamental Conventions on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH),” organised by the OSHE Foundation with technical support from Solidar Suisse and funding from the European Union, read a press release.

The workshop convened in Dhaka to discuss the implementation of OSH principles.

Participants urged the government, employers, and workers to adopt a tripartite approach to labor-related initiatives, fostering collaboration and shared responsibility.

AKM Masum Ul Islam, an occupational health expert, highlighted that Bangladesh has already ratified eight of the ten core ILO conventions. Ratifying Conventions 155 and 187 would demonstrate the government's commitment to workers' rights and well-being.

Sheuly Akter, Joint Inspector General of the Safety Unit at the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, assured participants that the government is dedicated to improving OSH awareness through training and legal reforms.

Alam Hossain, Director of the OSHE Foundation and head of the "Building a Sustainable Leather Sector in Bangladesh" project, emphasized the workshop's role in raising awareness and developing a roadmap for implementing OSH conventions.

The workshop brought together representatives from various stakeholders, including industrial establishments, labor organizations, NGOs, OSH experts, and government officials.
