The government has provided Tk 12 crore grants in FY 2022-2023 to 4,036 Swechasebi Mahila Samatis (welfare associations for women) registered with the Department of Women Affairs.

Tk 11.63 crores in grants have been distributed among 3,913 samitis in A, B and C categories, while Tk 61.5 lakh has been given to 123 samitis as special grants.

State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Fazilatun Nessa Indira distributed Tk 88.75 lakh grants in cash to the leaders of the samitis at Bangladesh Shishu Academy auditorium in Dhaka on Monday.

Speaking as the chief guest, Indira said the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman laid emphasis on cooperative societies for the development of the country, while Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also asked women to join the cooperatives.

The government assistance will help create financial resources among rural women, and hone them as independent ones and entrepreneurs to increase the women's participation in cooperative societies, she said.

The state minister said the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is implementing various programmes for creating employment opportunities for women and their economic emancipation.

She hoped that Swechasebi Mahila Samatis would come forward to further reduce women's poverty, create employment opportunities for women and help them become entrepreneurs.
