IMF trims GDP growth for Bangladesh to 6.4%

The International Monetary Fund has trimmed the economic expansion forecast for Bangladesh to 6.4 per cent for the fiscal year 2021-22.

The forecast was unveiled through the global lender’s latest World Economic Outlook, titled "War Sets Back the Global Recovery", released on Tuesday.

The IMF also forecast 6.7% growth for the South Asian country for FY2022-23.

Earlier in December 2021, the Washington-based lender in its Article 4 mission in Dhaka said that growth in Bangladesh was expected to pick up to 6.6 per cent in FY22. It also projected the growth would increase to 7.1 per cent in FY23.

Besides, in October that year, the IMF slashed the economic expansion forecast for Bangladesh to 6.5 per cent for FY22.

On April 6 this year, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) projected Bangladesh’s economy to expand 6.9 per cent in FY22.

For the current fiscal year, the government set a 7.2 per cent GDP (gross domestic product). The projection is almost close to achievement.

The regional lender in its virtual flagship report “Asian Development Outlook 2022” forecast 7.1 per cent growth for the country in FY23.
