Jhum farming, also known as slash and burn agriculture, is the only source of livelihood for the people living in remote hilly areas.
In Bandarban, about 90 per cent of the people living in the foothills in different areas, including Lama, Alikadam, Ruma, Rowangchhari, and Thanchi, are dependent on jhum cultivation.
Like every year, they have planted paddy and other crops, including maize, sesame, chilli, pumpkin and linseed, on hilly land.
Paddy seeds are usually sown in April and harvesting begins after four months of nursing the plants.
The harvest will ensure the supply of food for the whole year.
