Budget for FY24 will be passed on June 26

The budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year will get Parliament’s approval on June 26.

On June 25, the Finance Bill will be passed.

The decisions came at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the current Parliament held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka. Committee Chair and Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presided over the meeting.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin convened the 23rd session of the parliament exercising the power bestowed upon him as per the clause (1) of article 72 of the constitution.

Initially the 23rd session of the current parliament that began on Wednesday will continue till June 26. The session will start at 5pm on each working day. The budget will be placed at 3pm on Thursday.

After a short recession for Eid-ul-Azha, the session will start its business on July 2.

After continuing for couple of weeks, the session will be prorogued.

It is also decided that the Speaker may extend or cut the working days of the current session.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal will place the national budget of over Tk 7,61,785 crore for the next fiscal year (FY24) at the Jatiya Sangsad on Thursday with the main philosophy of turning Bangladesh into a happy-prosperous, developed ‘Smart Bangladesh’ by 2041.

The possible budget size of the government this time is eying to attain a growth rate of 7.5 per cent in the FY24 while to contain the inflation rate around 6.5 per cent. The total investment target in the next year will be 33.8 per cent of GDP.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Opposition Leader Raushon Ershad, Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Obaidul Quader, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Huq Inu, Deputy Speaker M Shamshul Huq Tuku, Anisul Huq, Golam Mohammad Quader, Anisul Islam Mahmud and Noor-E-Alam Chowdhury attended the meeting. 

A total of 1,640 questions including 86 questions for the prime minister and 1,554 questions for other ministers were received for this session.

Some 32 call attention notices were received under Rule 71 while no notice was received from the Private members. The number of previously pending private bills is 8. Of the 22 government bills, 11 are under examination in committees, 4 are awaiting passage and 7 are awaiting introduction in the session.

Speaker nominates 5-member JS panel

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday nominated a five-member panel of chairmen for the 23rd session of the 11th parliament.

The panel members are ASM Firoz, Tanvir Shakil Joy, Dr Pran Gopal Dutta, Dr Rustam Ali Farazi and Begum Anjum Sultana.

The Speaker announced their names at the beginning of the day’s business.

They will conduct the House proceedings in chronological order in the absence of the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker.
