Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque on Monday said money laundering introduced USD crisis in the country.
He added, "Many businesses claimed that they can't open LCs due to the USD crisis. I think money laundering triggered the crisis here. Many people sent money abroad because of different reasons.
“Some people even sent money abroad selling their property.”
He made the remarks as chief guest at a ceremony in the city’s Hotel Intercontinental, where the government handed over crests to 44 business people, honoured with the commercially important person (CIP) status for their contribution to the country's economy in 2021.
Razzaque urged Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries (FBCCI) to play an active role to tackle money laundering to create awareness among businesses, as some businessmen are also involved in money laundering.
