The price of murikata onion variety is increasing again in Dhaka’s kitchen markets. The onion price has increased by Tk 10 to Tk 100 per kg in the last two days.
During visit to Malibagh Bazar, Moghbazar and Karwan Bazar on Tuesday, it was found that onion was being sold at Tk 100 per kg. This type of onion was sold at a maximum price of Tk 90 per kg two days ago.
Apart from this, the price of onion which was available at Tk 80 per kg has now increased to Tk 90 per kg. There is no supply of imported onion in the market. Only a few shops have imported onions, but in very small quantities. Imported onions were sold at Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg.
Md. Al Amin, an onion seller in the capital's Maniknagar market said, "New local onions of a slightly larger size have arrived in the market now."
As the quality of this onion is slightly better, the price has also increased. But there is no shortage of onion supply, he said.
Onion prices have also increased at Sujanagar and Santhia upazilas in Pabna, one of the main production hubs. It has been found that the price of onion has been increasing in the local market for a week.
Syed Paran, a wholesale onion seller at Karwan Bazar, said that the season of murikata onion variety is almost at the end. “Now our regular hali onion variety season was about to begin. But due to continuous rains, there is delay in the start of new onion season.”
“Onion price will decrease again when the new season will start. We hope that the price of onion will be dropping during the holy month of Ramadan,” he added.
According to the market price report published by Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) on Tuesday, local onion was sold for Tk 90 to Tk 100 per kg in the capital’s market.
One week ago, the price of this onion was Tk 75 to Tk 80 per kg. And the price of imported onion is between Tk 100 and Tk 120 per kg. A week ago, it was Tk 85 to Tk 90 per kg. The prices of domestic and imported onions rose by 23 and 26 per cent respectively during the week, the report showed.
