PHP Ship Breaking and Recycling Industries Limited Managing Director Mohammed Zahirul Islam Rinku has highlighted the challenges and progress of the shipbreaking sector in Bangladesh at the United Nation South Asia Forum.

The Bangladesh Country Session at the 3rd UN South Asia Forum on Business and Human Rights was organised by the International Labour Organization (ILO), said a press release on Friday.

The forum discussed business development in the country, lessening the effects of global climate change, and human rights.

In his remarks, Zahirul highlighted the radical transformation and development of the country's shipbreaking sector.

The shipyard owned by the PHP family, the first Green Shipyard in the country, received the Green Ship Recycling certification in 2016 which was certified by the Italian classification society RINA for breaking ships in a safe and balanced environment.

PHP ship breaking and recycling yard is also the first protective shipyard in Bangladesh according to the Hong Kong Convention.

In January 2020, the shipyard also received Japanese recognition as the world's highest charter, with only 35 shipyards in the world claiming the certificate. PHP Shipyard received the country's Maritime Award in 2021.
