As the chief guest the minister made the remark at the three-day Bhutan Trade and Investment Fair's opening ceremony in the capital's Gulshan Shooting Complex, read a press release issued by the Commerce Ministry.

“Bangladesh and Bhutan signed the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) in 2020 and the 'Traffic-in-Transit Agreement' on March 22 this year. Traders can utilise the facilities of PTA and transit agreements to develop inter-relationships between traders as well as develop trade and commerce,” Tipu Munshi said.

“Emphasis should be placed on regional integration to increase economic activities, especially trade and investment. For this, regional integration, connectivity and inter-regional trade should be developed as well as mutual trust and confidence among the neighbours.”

“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has established 100 Special Economic Zones (SEZ) across the country. India, Japan and South Korea have already been granted economic zones. An opportunity has been given to develop an economic zone in Kurigram, close to the Bhutan border. Meanwhile, Bhutan urged public and private investors to invest in these business-friendly economic zones.”

“Rail connectivity with two ports and transit facilities along with Saidpur International Airport can significantly contribute to Bhutan's economic growth and development. The fair will strengthen trade besides providing an excellent platform for networking and exploring business and investment opportunities for businesses, entrepreneurs and service providers of the two countries,” Tipu Munshi added.

Around 25 companies from Bhutan participated in the fair where premium quality products were being displayed. The fair will run from June 23-25. Apart from the fair, a seminar on investment opportunities in Bhutan especially in the agricultural sector will be held at the same venue.

Bhutan's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Rinchen Kuentsyl, head of the embassy, business chairpersons and other important business people were also present at the programme.
