Real estate companies have urged the government to reconsider its decision to make builders seek permits from city corporations for new constructions.

They came up with the call at a press conference held at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka on Saturday.

At the conference, Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB) President Alamgir Shamsul Alamin said when the government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been in the process of making doing business easy, such decisions seem contrary to the purpose.

Terming the decision as conflicting and unwanted, he said, “At a time when we are demanding a one-stop service to ease our sufferings (in getting permits), more and more organisations are being involved to oversee this issue.”

The move will create impediment in the housing industry, which is one of the largest sectors in the country, he said.

The reaction comes in response to a recent comment made by Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Md Tazul Islam said anyone planning to build structures in Dhaka must acquire approval from both Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) and its respective city corporation to start construction.

At that meeting, attended by mayors of Dhaka’s two city corporations and other government officials to discuss ways to tackle the waterlogging issue during the monsoon, Tazul mentioned that aside from issuing approvals, the two city corporations will also conduct regular monitoring.

The REHAB chief also demanded facilitating investment in the real estate sector keeping in mind the existing housing shortage in the country.

“The housing sector has been contributing a lot to the economy and such proposals from city corporations are not investment friendly.”
