The Bangladesh Garments Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMEA), a subsidiary sector of the main export income-generating garment industry, is set to hold its biennial election on May 11.

Nasirul Alam, panel leader of the Active Members Union and managing director of Poly Plan Limited, announced their 20-point election manifesto on Thursday for the 2024-26 term aimed at the digitalisation, dynamism, and development of the accessories and packaging industry.

For the first time since its inception, the board of directors for BGAPMEA will be formed through direct voting.

On this occasion, the Active Members Union recently hosted a panel introduction programme at a five-star hotel in Dhaka.

Md Khosru Chowdhury, managing director of Nipa Group and MP for Dhaka-18 Constituency, introduced the 21 candidates of the Active Members Union at the event.

Nasirul Alam stated, "After 33 years, the election programme is being organised in a democratic process; this is the first success of our panel. This time, members have the opportunity to elect qualified leadership through voting. If there is a vote, it becomes possible to voice the demands of the members. So, from now on, the main theme of our organisation will be - No selection, only election.”

At the meeting, Jamil Ahmed, head of the core committee of the panel and managing director of Britannia Label BD Limited, said, "The members demand incentives for exports, uninterrupted gas and electricity supply in factories, establishment of their own buildings, and freedom from the harassment of renewing business documents. We will make 100 per cent effort to meet these demands using our talent, skills, and competencies.”

Mohammad Shah Alam, former MP from Brahmanbaria-4, and Arshad Jamal (Dipu), vice president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), attended as special guests.
