Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan said that their production costs have increased due to the ongoing power and energy crisis and fuel price hikes.
He made the comment during a press conference on Saturday at the BGMEA office in Dhaka.
“We have to run our factories using diesel-powered generators as the factories are experiencing heavy load shedding for several hours. But due to fuel prices hike, our production has increased," Faruque said.
"Considering the ongoing economic crisis, we urged the government for uninterrupted energy supply to the industry and reduce source tax from 1 per cent to 0.5 per cent," he added.
In the press conference, the BGMEA declared the schedule of Made in Bangladesh Week which will start from November 12 in the capital.
During the week, 37 IAF world fashion convention, third Dhaka Apparel Summit, Dhaka Apparel Exhibition, Fashion show, Cultural Festival, and BUFT workshop will hold.
40 countries top level fashion brands and suppliers will participate in the week, he informed.
Recognising the importance of strengthening Bangladesh's presence in the global fashion market and to initiate a greater collaboration with the global stakeholders for sustainable manufacturing and sourcing, BGMEA and BKMEA pursued IAF to organise the 37th World Fashion Convention in Bangladesh.
IAF has agreed to that proposition and the 37th World Fashion Convention will be hosted in Bangladesh in collaboration with BGMEA and BKMEA during 12-15 November 2022 at Radisson BLU Dhaka.
It is noteworthy to mention that the IAF Convention is a high level, international meeting of global apparel industry stakeholders from all continents. Since 1983, IAF convention is being held at every year in different host countries of IAF members.
The IAF convention will be a 3-dayl-ong event where in the first day, a board meeting containing all the IAF Board of Director. A daylong conference to be participated by local and international speakers will also be a part of this convention. Currently, we are doing all the preparatory works for the convention.
