The Bangladesh Garments Workers Unity Council (BGWUC) has urged the government and garment owners to hike the minimum wage of workers from Tk 8,000 to Tk 22,000.
Aside from the wage hike, the rights body made seven other demands, including the formation of a new wage board and providing the garment workers with a number of benefits such rationing of essential commodities at subsidised prices.
The BGWUC made the demand at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday.
At the press conference, BGWUC leaders announced a widespread workers' movement in the industrial areas from January 20 to February 15 to press home the demands, read a press release.
If the government does not accept the demands even after the movement, the BGWUC will go for a tougher movement from February 24.
