Rural bank deposits down 22%

Bank deposits in rural areas have decreased by 22.56 per cent, while urban deposits are up 6.37 per cent, said Bangladesh Bank in its latest report made available to media on Tuesday.

The total number of bank depositors until September 2023 stood at nearly 15 crore, said the report. They deposited over Tk 17 crore in their accounts during this period.

Among them, 1 lakh 13 thousand 586 bank account holders have deposits of Tk 1 crore and above. Around Tk 7.26 lakh crore has been deposited in these accounts. That means such account holders account for 42.35 per cent of the total deposits in the country's banking sector.

Till June 2023, the total number of depositors was over 14 crore 59 lakh with deposits amounting to Tk 16.87 lakh crore in these account.

There were 1,13,554 bank accounts with deposits of more than Tk 1 crore.

According to this, the number of accounts holding Tk 1 crore and more increased by 32 in a span of three months and 7,066 in a span of one year, the BB report said.
