Tax-GDP ratio, bad loans persisting challenges: SANEM

Despite macroeconomic success, Bangladesh is tackling several long-standing challenges, such as a very low tax-GDP ratio, bad loans, weak governance in the banking sector, and low foreign direct investment (FDI).

“Until the onset of the crisis, Bangladesh was successful in terms of managing budget deficit, current account deficit, inflationary pressure, exchange rate stability, and a growing forex reserve,” said South Asian Network on Economic Modeling’s (SANEM) Executive Director Dr Selim Raihan.

He was giving a presentation titled “Shocks and Shields Sustaining Development in a Turbulent Time” at the 6th SANEM Annual Economists' Conference (SAEC) 2023, held at BRAC Centre Inn in Dhaka on Saturday.

Dr Raihan recommended that the government focus on the invisible issues.
