Tk12,185cr budget approved for 53 public univs

The University Grants Commission (UGC) on Sunday approved a budget of Tk 12,185 crore for 53 public universities across the country for the upcoming FY24. The commission also approved a Tk 77.45 crore budget for itself for the same fiscal year, UGC sources said.

The budget was approved at the 165th full commission meeting with UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah in the chair, read a press release.

Of the amount for 53 public universities, the revenue budget is Tk 6,109 crore and development budget is Tk 6,076 crore. Like the previous year, Dhaka University got the highest allocation of Tk 853 crore for the next FY.

Total budget allocation for public universities has increased by Tk 2,920 crore in FY24 compared to the revised budget of Tk 9,265 crore in FY2022-23.

In the proposed budget, the UGC approved Tk 174 crore for research support. This figure goes up by Tk 24 crore compared year-on-year.

UGC Chairman Prof Kazi Shahidullah said over Tk 12,000 crore has been allocated in FY24 for the management and development of the public universities. He urged the universities to follow austerity measures considering the current economic situation.
