Vegetable prices soar even in peak season

The prices of almost all types of vegetables have increased again during the peak season although their prices decreased slightly at the beginning of winter.

In the last week, the prices of some vegetables, including beans, gourd and brinjal, have increased by up to Tk 30 per kg. Besides, the average prices of almost all types of vegetables have increased by Tk 10-20 per kg.

The price hikes of potatoes, onions, eggs and vegetables are hitting the common people’s pockets. They said when the prices of fish and meat go up in the market, low-income people have to eat their three-course meals with vegetables.

They also hoped that the prices of vegetables would drop with its glut during the winter season. But in fact, their prices shot up in the market.

Since the beginning of winter ‘known as the season of vegetables’, the supply has increased but the prices have not come down as expected. Now the prices of all kinds of vegetables are increasing again.

Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) collects data on the prices of 16 types of vegetables every day. According to them, the prices of eight vegetables have increased and only two have decreased in the last week.

Gourd was selling at Tk 60-70 per piece last week. Its price increased by Tk 30 this week and was being sold at Tk 80-100 per piece in the capital’s kitchen market on Thursday.

In various markets, including Shantinagar in the capital, beans, one of the most-selling vegetables in the winter season, were sold at Tk 60-80 a kg on Thursday, which was Tk 50-70 per kg last week.

Besides, the price of eggplant has increased by Tk 10 per kg and was selling at Tk 70-80 per kg. The price of pointy gourd went up by Tk 20 per kg and was selling at Tk 70-80 per kg. Also, the price of okra has increased by Tk 20 to Tk 90-100 per kg, which was Tk 70-80 per kg one week earlier.

The price of potato has increased by Tk 20 per kg and the price of cabbage has risen by Tk 10-20 per piece to Tk 60-70.

Anwar Hossain, a vegetable seller in the capital's Maniknagar area, said although the supply of vegetables is normal so far, the prices have gone up abnormally in the last week.

The prices of vegetables have increased in the wholesale market as heavy rains damaged some vegetables in early December, he added.
