The results of Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent exams of 2020 were published on Saturday, showing 100% pass rate.
A total of 1,61,807 students got the highest grade point average (GPA 5) under 11 educations boards.
The results were officially announced at the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha around 10:45am.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina joined the programme through videoconferenceing from her official Ganabhaban residence.
The HSC results were evaluated based on the students’ Junior School Certificate (JSC), and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) results as no exam was held during the Covid-19 pandemic.
As many as 13,65,789 students were supposed to sit for the exams under 11 educations boards.
The cabinet earlier approved a draft bill for an amendment to the Intermediate and Secondary Education Ordinance 1961 allowing the education boards to publish results without holding exams amid any crisis.
Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni received a summary of the results on behalf of the premier.
The education ministry earlier asked students to collect their results online or via mobile SMS, and not to make gathering in educational institutes, due to the risks of Covid-19.
They were asked for making pre-registration through typing HSC< >Board name (first 3 letter) <>Roll<>2020 from their mobile message option and then send to 16222 number for getting result on the mobile phone.
The pre-registered candidates will get their results immediately after publishing the result. The result will be available from the tele-talk website www.educationboardresults.gov.bd or from the concerned education board websites.
Technical committee
In October, the education ministry formed a seven-member technical committee, headed by Nazmul Haque Khan, additional secretary of the ministry, for developing a method of evaluating the candidates based on their previous SSC and JSC results.
The HSC batch of 2020 will be the first batch of students who will get certificates without sitting for the exams as it is the first time in Bangladesh history that a public exam has been cancelled.
Educational institutions closure
The government has again extended the closure of educational institutions, except the Qawmi madrasas, until February 14 as there has been no significant improvement in the coronavirus situation in the country.
Education Minister Dipu Moni confirmed it in an official media release on Friday after consultation with others.
The government shut all the schools and educational institutions on March 17 last year after the country confirmed its first Covid-19 cases on March 8.
The closure was extended several times, most recently until January 30 this year to protect the students from the virus infections.
