The University Grants Commission (UGC) issued a public notice on Thursday regarding actions taken against 18 private universities due to the expiration of temporary certificates, and failure to transfer activities to their respective permanent campuses within the stipulated time.
The admission process for new students in all programmes of Prime Asia University, Stamford University Bangladesh, ASA University and Victoria University Bangladesh will be suspended as there is no visible progress in building permanent campuses and shifting activities there.
Apart from this, the admission of new students in the temporary campuses of State University and Manarat International University will be suspended until further notice. However, programmes conducted in permanent campuses of these two universities will continue.
Speaking to The Business Post, UGC Director (Private University) Md Omar Faruque said, “We took the decision to halt student admission at four private universities as there is no visible progress over transfer of all activities to their own respective campuses.
However, due to visible progress of construction of permanent campuses, the UGC has extended the deadline for six private universities till March 31 to shift all activities to permanent campuses.
These universities are Dhaka International University, Royal University, Southeast University, City University, The Millennium University and Bangladesh University.
The public notification stated that if these universities fail to transfer all activities to permanent campuses within the new deadline, admission of new students in all their programmes will be completely halted from April 1.
At the same time, all temporary campuses or buildings except the permanent campuses of these private universities will be considered illegal, it added.
The six universities are BRAC University, University of Development Alternative, Green University, Uttara University, Presidency University and The People’s University.
But if these universities fail to transfer all programs including educational programs to the permanent campus within the fresh deadline, the admission of new students in all programs will be completely stopped from July 1.
At the same time, all permanent campuses or buildings except the own permanent campuses of these universities will be considered illegal.
Earlier, in April last year, UGC asked the private universities that the temporary campuses of the universities would be declared illegal and they would not be allowed to admit new students unless they shifted to permanent campuses by December 31, last year.
