Country’s education system needs revolutionary changes: Prof Arefin

Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University and noted academician Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said some revolutionary changes must be brought to restore the country’s education system.

“Country’s education system cannot be restored by conducting some routine discussions, but some revolutionary adjustments must be implemented for bringing the changes”, said Arefin, also Chairman of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS).   

He was addressing the inaugural function of UNESCO participation program 2020-21 on ‘Dissemination of UNESCO proprieties among students of secondary schools through promotion of global citizenship education (GCED)’ at BNCU conference hall in the capital.    

National Association of UNESCO Club in Bangladesh organized the program incorporation with Bangladesh National Commission for UNESCO (BNCU) and UNESCO Dhaka office.

Siddique, also a professor of mass communication and journalism at the DU, said “Bangabandhu nationalized the entire primary education system in war-torn Bangladesh and made it free of cost, compulsory, and one-way education system. He made the primary education system free so that the children of many poor families who could not afford this compulsory education”.

The professor suggested making an environment to let the children, who will lead the country and the world in future, grow up in a way so that they can love people, feel the problem of others and become empathetic which require the ability to recognize the suffering of another person from his or her point of view.

It’s easy to give some money to someone who is trouble or having problems but being empathetic is means to understand the feelings of the man and treat his/her the way he actually need, he added.

Bangabandhu, who had to lose his life for loving the people too much was the best example of love and he taught how to love people, the professor furthered.        

Additional Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education Division Md Hasanul Islam, Chief of UNESCO office, Dhaka Hahua Fan and Secretary-General of UNESCO Club Mahbubuddin Chowdhury also addressed the program, with BNCU Deputy Secretary-General Shohel Imam Khan in the chair.
