HC rejects writ seeking stay on O, A level exams

The High Court (HC) has rejected a writ petition seeking a stay order on O level and A level examinations in October and November.

The High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order on Wednesday after hearing a writ petition.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Moniruzzaman Lincoln appeared for the petitioner before the court who filed the writ petition on behalf of Tamanna Tabassum, an A level examinee.

Earlier on September 27, a Writ Petition was filed with the HCD seeking a stay order on O level and A-level examinations to be held in October and November. In the writ petition, the petitioner also asked to formulate a policy for the management of English medium schools.

Secretaries of the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Director Operations Examinations, British Council and others were made respondents in the writ petition.

On September 23, the Ministry of Education gave its approval to hold O level and A level examinations in November, with some conditions.

Earlier in the day, some English medium school students sought Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's intervention to cancel the upcoming O and A level examinations.

On September 20, the British Council sent an application to the ministry asking for permission for the examinations to be held under the UK boards, Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel.

A level exams under Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel are scheduled to start on October 1 and October 5 respectively.

Edexcel’s O level examinations are scheduled to start on November 2 while the exams under Cambridge International are scheduled to start on November 5.
